The natural extract of plants or tree as gum are called resin.  Resins are
hardened and waxy pieces of tree sap or gum, with the varieties coming
from different plants. In order to use resins as incense, one need to use
them with charcoal tablets or burning coals. Resins produce a lot of

Common Resin Incense
Frankincense resin
Applied to various gumresins, containing volatile oils, that diffuse a strong fragrance in burning. Oriental
frankincense, also known as olibanum, was esteemed by ancient peoples for use in embalming and as
incense and is still the most important
incense resin. It is obtained from several Oriental trees that grow in
north-eastern Africa and Arabia. The hardened, semi-transparent yellowish material is still used widely as
ceremonial incense. Common frankincense is obtained from the bark of the Norway spruce. When boiled in
water and strained, the resin becomes Burgundy pitch, formerly used in making medicinal plasters.
Sandrac Incense resin:
Brittle resin is a brittle yellowish translucent resin exuded by a coniferous tree. A coniferous tree with flat
branches and leaves with overlapping scales, which produces Sandarac found in northwestern Africa, Spain.
Sandrac is hard and dark aromatic wood.
Myrrh incense resin
Myrrh, aromatic gum resin, of which the true form is obtained from a tree in Africa and Arabia. A similar product, known as balm of Gilead or Mecca myrrh, is obtained from another
Arabian species. Myrrh consists of a mixture of resin, gum, and the essential oil myrrhol, which produces the characteristic odour. It has a bitter, pungent taste, and ranges in colour
from yellowish-brown to reddish-brown. Myrrh was highly valued in ancient times as an ingredient of perfume and incense, and was also used as an ointment. The gum resin was
also used as a stimulant tonic and is used today as an antiseptic in mouthwashes and toothpastes; a tincture in alcohol is used to treat sore gums and teeth.
