Clove incense stick

Clove incense sticks are made from a small evergreen tree ( Syzygium aromaticum or Eugenia
caryophyllata ) of the family Myrtaceae ( myrtle family) and for its unopened flower bud, an important
spice.
The buds, whose folded petals are enclosed in four tooth like lobes of the calyx, are gathered by
hand, dried, and marketed either whole or ground for culinary purposes. Clove oil, obtained by
distillation, is widely used in synthetic vanilla and other flavorings as well as in perfumes; it is often
considered medicinal and antiseptic. The spicy fragrance of cloves incense stick was used by the
Chinese and by the Romans, but the first instance of finding the tree growing wild was recorded by
the Portuguese when they discovered the Spice Islands. The Portuguese and then the Dutch held
the clove trade in monopoly, eliminating the tree from all but a single island, until the late 18th cent.
Today cloves are products also of other tropical areas, e.g., the West Indies and islands off E Africa
such as Madagascar and Zanzibar.
Clove, common name for a tropical tree of the myrtle family, and for its dried flower buds. The clove
tree is a small- to medium-size evergreen; native to the Moluccas, eastern Indonesia, it is now
cultivated elsewhere in the tropics. The flowers are small and produced in great profusion in
clusters. The leaves, flowers, and bark are aromatic and used to make incense stick. The ripe fruit
resembles an olive in shape but is smaller. It is dark red and is sometimes sold in a dried state
under the name mother clove; in this form it has an aroma and flavour similar to those of clove but
much weaker. The flower buds are gathered and dried by exposure to the smoke of a wood fire and
to the rays of the Sun. Cloves are used extensively as a condiment and flavouring in many types of
cookery.
Oil is obtained from cloves by repeated distilling. In dentistry this oil is used as an anaesthetic and
sometimes as an antiseptic. It is also used in perfumes and soaps.
